NZ 2015: South Island – Te Anau to Milford Sound

Most people who visit the south island of NZ find the time to check out Milford Sound; it would be no different for us! We left Queenstown after a relaxing breakfast by the lake and started the long drive out to Milford Sound. We’d heard that the road to Milford from Te Anau is often closed due to avalanche risk, so we intended to make our way to Te Anau and reassess the road status before continuing on. After a few hours driving past the ridiculously beautiful scenery, we arrived in Te Anau and debilitated as to whether we should continue to Milford. We both really wanted to go, but the risk would be getting trapped in Milford and missing a few days of skiing due to road closures. We didn’t want to miss out on skiing, so we stayed in Te Anau a night and planned to drive to Milford the following morning, check it out, and drive all the way back to Queenstown the same day. It was the safest plan to avoid being stuck out in Milford but the downside… we wouldn’t get to enjoy a sunrise/sunset over Milford.

Te Anau was very quiet with half the town away on hunting expeditions, but we enjoyed the downtime anyway. A bonus of staying in Te Anau was having more time to enjoy the drive out to Milford. The road is stunning…
