I tagged along with the McKenzie’s over the Easter long weekend and went camping on the Sunshine Coast. I haven’t been camping properly since I was a kid, and even though I was anxious about not having a decent tent and the wet weather forecast, I was really looking forward to a weekend away from work, the internet, and the chaos that life can be at times. Alyce and I drove up to Charlie Morland early Friday morning to beat the traffic but we managed a short stop in Maleny along the way. It’s just our luck that our stop in Maleny allowed us to stumble upon a little food market that had only just opened – as in, it had cracked it’s doors Friday morning and we were some of the first to receive the delicious coffee and homemade treats.
Charlie Morland is situated approximately 2 hours north of Brisbane and the camp ground is nestled in the hills of the hinterland with a little river snaking around its perimeter. The parklands is full of native wildlife that take advantage of both the creek wrapping around the site and the free meals left around the place by unsuspecting campers. With all the rain we had recently, the little river that borders the campground became our first hurdle on the trip! Alyce was quick to throw in the towel and turn the car around, but after a few minutes of staring across at the campers on the other side, David came to our rescue in the 4×4 and ferried us across the river. We set up our loan tent, moved the tent, set it up again, erected our tarp and blew up our airbed before settling in to our new camping chairs – thanks Bunnings!
We spent three awesome days out at Charlie Morland and enjoyed the slower pace, the camp-cooking-contest and a few solid bush walks. The bushwalks were up to 10km long and involved many river crossings, buckets of sweat and stunning views of the rolling hinterland hills. The walks were generally followed by feasts, campside boardgames, a dip in the creek and Alyce getting attacked by leeches. Â I also enjoyed a few cheeky wines as the afternoon sun lit up the trees one last time before dipping away for the day. Â It was so relaxing and I ended up feeling so refreshed after the weekend. Â And an added bonus – the weather man was completely off the mark – we had some heavy rain Saturday night but were spoiled with sunshine all weekend.
Here’s some photos from the long weekend. Thanks for the awesome weekend guys!
